What to Wear in Summer – Tips & Tricks

Ah, summertime. We plan and save and endure to make it to these warm sunny months!

But once we get here, it can be very stressful trying to figure out what to wear.

During the summer, much more of your skin and body is visible than during the other seasons. Often our body shape or size has changed since the same time last year. Most importantly, we travel and need to plan accordingly. So if you’re looking for dos and don’ts for how to navigate summer fashion, read on.

  • Do: protect against chaffing. At the beach, out for brunch with your friends, enjoying some casual window shopping — it doesn’t matter what you do, this time of year is sweaty. For everyone. Regardless of your age or weight, there are always going to be little bits that rub against each other (under the arms, anyone?) or against clothing. Be proactive in protecting against it before it reaches a critical level. Bring along a light pair of leggings or a sheer swim top to pull on with your outfit. Or invest in anti-chaffing lotion. There are some awesome ones (the stuff REALLY works, even if you are putting it on after you feel the rubbing getting out of control) that look like a stick of deodorant that you apply straight on to the tough spots. You’re welcome.
  • Don’t: go for too tight. Even if you’re miniature or super-ripped, no one looks good in clothes that are too small. They make you look like you’re either cheap or trying too hard. Neither of which is attractive. Let your body speak for itself by dressing to celebrate your current shape.
  • Do: wear white clothes and clothes that are see-through. Both of these things are a no-no the rest of the year, so embrace the lightness of these options now. Psychologically, white is refreshing and restarting — so let that feeling work its way into your wardrobe.
  • Don’t: go for dark colors. This is a time for happiness and brightness, even if you live somewhere cosmopolitan that normally favors all shades of black. Bright or light colors look good in solids or in various mixes and designes. Essentially, all patterns are welcome in the summer time, even if they are loud, neon kinds of fabrics, as long as you don’t try to mix too many together at once,
  • Do: hide bra-straps. It’s one thing to let your swimsuit show through or peek out, but unless you’re deliberately wearing a lacy halter top that is meant to be displayed, letting your bra straps show can really look lazy or tacky. If you aren’t able to invest in new underwear that has easily changeable straps, you could always use rubberbands to create a makeshift T strap or safety pins to attach to your tank top.
  • Don’t: pack too much. This is not the time of year to weigh yourself down with too many options or too many layers. If you’re going on vacation, or even doing a day trip and need day/evening wear, minimize your base outfit and have a couple things you can change about it to maximize it’s use. Choose pieces that change shape or have versatile style. Add a light scarf to shake things up. You want to leave plenty of room in your suitcase for souvenirs. Plus, simple ensembles make you look elegant and relaxed.

  • Do: still accessorize. Sunglasses are always a must. No question about it. Jewelry ranges from nothing to flashy absurdity — there are no rules here, accept what you feel comfortable with. Some people get the idea that scarves are only for the winter and fall, but that’s not at all true! Think of your favorite Hollywood stars cruising through Tuscany in their convertibles scarves are useful year-round. If they are light and sheer, they are perfectly acceptable summer wear. Plus, if you’re staying on the beach, it turns very cold at night, so having those kinds of additions really can serve many purposes. scarves, if they’re light, can protect from sun.
  • Don’t: wear uncomfortable foot wear. No one expects you to suffer. During the summer, your friends expect you to be chill and comfortable. So reach for cute stuff, but like with the rest of these suggestions, go for light and easy. No bulking heavy choices. The only exception might be a really high, sparkly heel if you’re doing Vegas and even then, a sparkly sandal can do the job well too!
  • Do: wear fabrics that have SPF built-in. They are not necessarily cheap, but they are certainly getting more and more easy to find. They also come in all kinds of designs/colors, as well as various articles of clothing. This way you have amazing skin protection but don’t have to smell like sunscreen all day!
  • Don’t: follow any of these rules if they aren’t good for you. The most important thing in fashion, whether it’s summer or not, is to be happy and proud to be you. So follow your instincts and have fun.
